The operating agreement controls the legal and commercial consequences. The technical problem is deciding what the well is worth before the clock runs out.
Consent and non-consent decisions force technical and commercial teams to compress work that is normally done over weeks into a much shorter window. Offsets must be identified, production histories normalized, landing intervals compared, completion designs understood and uncertainty made explicit. The question is not simply whether nearby wells produced. It is whether the proposed well is technically analogous enough to justify the capital and risk.
Fast analysis is dangerous when well identity, production ownership, formation tops, lateral geometry or completion records are inconsistent. The first step should be to establish which wells are truly comparable and which data can be relied upon. A smaller clean analog set is more useful than a larger noisy one.
A useful review asks how the proposed location compares with offsets in rock quality, landing depth, lateral length, spacing, parent-child context, completion intensity and historical performance. Production curves should be normalized where appropriate so that differences in lateral length or operating history do not masquerade as reservoir quality.
A technically defensible election does not require pretending the answer is certain. It requires showing the assumptions that matter: analog selection, decline behavior, recoverable volume, capital, timing and commodity-price sensitivity. When the evidence is mixed, that should be visible in the recommendation rather than averaged away.
Non-consent provisions, penalties, payout mechanics, participation rights and notice requirements vary by agreement. Technical analysis should support the election, not substitute for review of the governing JOA and the specific AFE.
AI and machine learning are most useful when they compress repetitive evidence assembly and comparison: locating offsets, reconciling source data, normalizing curves, comparing petrophysical and completion attributes, and ranking analogs. Human technical authority remains essential when deciding whether the proposed well belongs in the analog population and how much uncertainty is acceptable.
